This is one of my favorite buildings in Boston. It is situated on the corner of Court and Tremont streets about two blocks from my condo. Its deep red brick and ornate cornices just make it pop in contrast to its neighboring buildings, and it makes an architectural statement at one of the widest intersections in all of downtown. It is also originally the site of Ingersoll's Inn, where President George Washington stayed in 1789 on a visit to this great city. It's not the most storied building in Boston - not by far. But it still grabs my attention every time I walk past it, and it is a reminder to me that the city of Boston has been growing and thriving since before we even declared our independence.

This year marks my 25th year in Boston. No matter what part of the country you are from, Boston is known as one of the founding cities of our nation, rich with the buildings and stories that tell our history. But you have a different appreciation for it all when you live here. To walk the streets that the famous and the unknown did three centuries ago, to sit in the pews of churches that pre-date the Declaration of Independence, and to step through the doorways of structures that invited the early settlers looking for a better life creates an emotional and psychological connection to the past that one can only experience when you are immersed in it.

That is why when I discovered the Boston Preservation Alliance eight years ago, I had an immediate respect and admiration for its mission. Through advocacy, partnership, collaboration, and education, we aim to protect places, promote vibrancy, and preserve the character of this great city. By doing so, we hope that current and future residents and visitors to Boston will be able to better understand and appreciate the history of Boston and the varied stories of those who lived here, worked here, or otherwise contributed to the fabric of this unique city.

The Boston Preservation Alliance (a 501(c)(3) non-profit) is the only organization whose presence and voice advocates for the entire city of Boston. We have had many notable  successes throughout our 45-year history, with our passionate advocacy and direct involvement playing a critical role in preserving Fenway Park, the Citgo sign, and most recently, the Buckminster Hotel. As a member of the Board of Directors, I'm truly proud to have been a part of such a wonderful organization and to be working with such a diverse group of people who share my pride and passion for the city of Boston. We rely almost entirely on generous donations from those who share our passion for Boston. I would be grateful for any contribution you could make to the Alliance during May Preservation Month so that we can continue our mission on behalf of you, the city, and those from across the country and the world who come to Boston to learn and experience how our great nation got its start.

ABOUT Preservation Month | 2024

For 45 years the Boston Preservation Alliance has served the residents of Boston as a nonprofit organization that protects and improves the quality of Boston's architectural and cultural heritage. Through advocacy and education, we bring people and organizations together to influence the future of Boston's historic buildings, landscapes, and communities.

Without our members, donors, and community partners, our voice would fall silent–a growing membership makes our voice stronger because together we make Boston better.

Check out the projects we're currently engaged in and thank you for your continued consideration and support.
