There's nothing that makes me remember how special Boston is like a walk around my neighborhood. Once just marshlands, Back Bay feels as if it were plucked from Paris—the buildings here were architecturally inspired by 19th-century plans for the City of Light. I notice the Parisian influence most in this pair of limestone beauties on Comm. Ave. Built in 1882, the sisters originally had window-bay-bedecked brownstone facades similar to many others on the street. In 1909, the owner at the time gave them their current Art Nouveau-inspired appearance, with hopes to combine both buildings into one dazzling music room. Though the renovation was never completed, this pair still stands out from the pack of brick-red and slate-gray structures (and gives me a moment of delight each time I pass on my way to Trader Joe's).

Organizations like the Boston Preservation Alliance shoulder the responsibility of preserving iconic structures like these homes throughout the city. Working with community groups, city leaders, and—most importantly—Boston's residents, the Alliance ensures residents and visitors alike can see each distinct patch in the quilt of Boston's history—witnessing how they all are sewn together into its rich heritage. Please join me this Preservation Month in supporting the Alliance's mission to bring communities together and leverage their collective power to protect and celebrate Boston's historic resources. Whether its $5, $10, $50, or more, your support will ensure the Alliance can continue to have a seat at the table to guide thoughtful change that ensures the stewardship of the historic character that defines Boston.

ABOUT Preservation Month | 2024

For 45 years the Boston Preservation Alliance has served the residents of Boston as a nonprofit organization that protects and improves the quality of Boston's architectural and cultural heritage. Through advocacy and education, we bring people and organizations together to influence the future of Boston's historic buildings, landscapes, and communities.

Without our members, donors, and community partners, our voice would fall silent–a growing membership makes our voice stronger because together we make Boston better.

Check out the projects we're currently engaged in and thank you for your continued consideration and support.
